I just ordered my 8-core MP and I ordered it from Apple with 4 GB of RAM (4x1GB). I'm thinking about adding another 4GB (4x1GB) for a total of 8 GB. Does anyone have any experience with OWC as far as memory upgrades? This is what I'm thinking about: 'Netlist Memory for the Mac Pro 8-core / Quad-core Xeon is the exact same RAM you get from Apple!' I don't see how these can be Apple Certified (yet OWC's is only Apple Qualified?) when they run nearly 20°C hotter than the Apple OEM FB-DIMMs. My Mac Pro has increased fan noise now, and I'm thoroughly displeased. I will be contacting OWC regarding their misleading (bordering on false) advertising with regard to the pictures depicting the NetList heat spreaders, which USED to show the Apple style heat spreaders, but no longer do (they now show OWC's lesser 'Apple Qualified' style heat spreaders, which is exactly what I have on my new FB-DIMMs, ugh).
Good quality memory with heat spreaders that are listed as AT LEAST equivalant to Apple's (Certified no less!) should NOT run 20°C hotter than memory with Apple's heat spreaders. It isn't helping either that I can't find any information regarding at which temperature point the Mac Pros cut off bandwidth to affected FB-DIMMs to prevent thermal overload. I ordered my Netlist ram from OWC the day I ordered the 8-Core macpro.
Which was the day it was announced. At that point OWC hadn't updated their website to mention the 8-Core MacPros and Apple hadn't announced that the 4 core ram may not work. Well, today I called OWC (who's website now does mention the 8-Core) and they said that the ram I ordered is in fact different than the new ram they are getting in. So, they are sending me the new ram once it gets in.
If you ordered your ram close to the time the 8-core was announced you may want to double check what you are getting. I just bought two 1 GB NetList FB-DIMMs from OWC, and I must say I'm rather dismayed at the paltry heat spreader used on them.

I've got OWC, Transintl, and Apple OEM RAM in mine. I've gotten a significant temperature difference with the Apple OEM RAM alone, simply by moving it between the last two slots in Riser B to the last two slots in Riser A!
